Abstract

A developmental history of civilization is explicable in the dynamic relation between two types of class. One type desires to maintain the sociocultural hierarchy that has been formed by the division-placement of space-place, and the other type desires to deconstruct the same hierarchy. Utopia as an ideal place in nowhere reveals its non-historical nature by its abstractly ‘reverse’ relation to distopia as a negative place in reality. By Michel Foucault who calls the non-historicity of utopia a “sweet utopia,” heterotopia as “utopias having their respective places to be posited on maps” is presented as a counter-discourse against it. If so, how can heterotopia be realized? This paper purposes essentially to inquire, from this question, into the topological relation between space-place and existence, and to illumine, centering around Hahm Sung-ho’s poetry, how this topology of space-place is projected to the poetic imagination and presents the distopian reality and heterotopian prospect of modern cities. To develop this argument, a theoretically basic study begins by considering the inner limits of the placing principles of heterotopia and heterotopology which are proposed by Foucault. And to supplement this study by connecting organically with Giorgio Agamben’s conception of ‘profanazione,’ a close relation is discovered between the practical strategy of heterotopia and the method of profanazione, especially postmodernistic rhetoric, aiming for the ‘reconstruction’ of space-place. On these studies, it is analyzed that the topological (=architectonic) composition of (1)the spatial ‘fabric’ of ‘divinity’ and ‘profanity’ and (2)the spatial ‘cross’ of ‘existence’ and ‘history’ in Hahm Sung-ho’s poetry consists in the heterotopian prospect on the basis of profanazione. Consequently, a significance of poetic history of Hahm Sung-ho’s poetry consists not in the self-reflective ‘deconstruction’ of intellects that was the main trend of the modern poetry of Korea in the 1980~90s but in the ‘architectonic heterotopia’ that experimented in deconstruction as a ‘spatial-existential struggle.’
