Abstract
Human beings recognize the intangible image beyond the form through the form. In particular, Indians were very good at symbolically expressing the image world of formlessness(arūpa) beyond the time and space of matter(rūpa), and its history is long. It is important to read the representation correctly and understand the symbol correctly. And sharing the same images that can be mutually sympathized based on such representations and symbols is also the basis of religious culture enjoyed by Indians across the ages. Symbolic expressions based on religion have a very clear purpose and intention. This is because through the form of a precedent that achieved the ideals and purposes of the religion, each person used it as a channel to further strengthen their desire to be able to do so. This paper argued that it was not reasonable to read it as a thousand Buddhas, focusing on three reliefs of the Gupta era, which are commonly known to express “The Appearance Of A Thousand Buddhas In Śrāvastī”. This is because, according to the Indian iconographic tradition based on realism, it is not a thousand Buddhas without a thousand statues of Buddha. As a basis for this, the tradition of visual art was cited, centering on the Mānasāra Śilpaśastra, and compared the examples of Jaina iconography.
