Abstract

This paper attempted to examine the rhetorical structures found in the poetry of Kim Gu-yong through the lens of allegory. Employing methodologies rooted in text linguistics and rhetorical analysis, it illuminates the linguistic techniques utilized within his poetry while investigating the operational dynamics of allegory within its structural framework. When poets arrange language through rhetoric, they consistently prioritize meaning-making through structural organization. Furthermore, the structural deployment of rhetoric within a poet’s work can be construed as an attempt to typify and structure the complexities of life into language. Analyzing how language is structured by the poet unveils the unique rhetorical aspects at play, thereby revealing the construction of meaning through the interplay of action and context. This process aids in discovering and contextualizing the rules governing the poet’s constructed world. By dissecting the recurrent structural patterns of discourse employed by Kim Gu-yong, this study elucidates the poet’s intentions and aesthetic achievements in perceiving the world not merely through randomness or surrealism but through the very structure and fabric of language. Particularly, it aims to scrutinize the allegorical facets manifested within Kim Gu-yong’s poetry from a rhetorical perspective. To achieve this, the study seeks to trace the worldview of the speaker through an examination of the intricate structures of discourse evident in each poem. It argues that amidst the tumultuous and contradictory milieu of the 1960s to the 70s, Kim Gu-yong’s allegorical reasoning emerged from a sense of despair. Additionally, the study analyzes the rhetorical aspects of his poetry, with a focus on Walter Benjamin’s theory of allegory. Specifically, it contends that by employing rhetorical structures such as ‘contradiction’ and ‘juxtaposition’ to diversify and fragment meanings, Kim Gu-yong allegorically encapsulates the paradoxical aspects of urban civilization and the disillusionment of salvation. Chapter 2 delves into the allegorical aspects arising from the juxtaposition of conflicting attributes, utilizing the rhetoric of contradiction. It posits that such juxtaposition, rather than fostering similarity or rendering distinctions meaningless, engenders a holistic and organic worldview. This, in turn, leads to ruptures within the represented and actual meanings, reflecting contradictions and ironies prevalent in Kim Gu-yong’s poetry, and echoing the allegorical features of modernity departing from the symbolic structures of the past. Chapter 3 investigates how variations in parallel syntax create gaps between each variation, forming a chain of gaps that construct an allegorical framework of flux. Through these ruptures, a melancholic subjectivity emerges. A meticulous examination of the poems reveals a discernible critical gaze on the contradictory facets of society. The rhetorical structures and techniques employed by Kim Gu-yong in his poetry were emblematic of a critical perspective on society and allegorical reasoning.
