Abstract

This study undertakes a philosophical examination of whether golf etiquette can be justified as moral practice rather than remaining at the level of everyday convention or mere courtesies of play. To this end, employing Kant’s categorical imperative as the theoretical framework, it investigates the “ethical justification of golf etiquette” in light of its three formulations: 1 universalizability, 2 the principle of human dignity, and 3 the autonomy of the will. The analysis yields the following conclusions. First, rules such as refraining from unnecessary noise during play, preserving the course, and maintaining an appropriate pace of play are practices whose maxims must be universalizable if the game is to be sustained at all; in this respect they exemplify the First Formulation’s requirement to act only on a maxim that one can will as a universal law. Second, taking care in one’s movement not to step across another player’s putting line, avoiding the obstruction of a fellow player’s line of sight, and securing safety constitute forms of conduct that treat one’s companions not merely as means but as ends in themselves, thereby conforming to the Second Formulation’s principle of humanity and human dignity. Third, the voluntary reporting of rule infractions and action grounded in one’s considered judgment instantiate self‐legislating autonomy rather than external constraint, thereby realizing the Third Formulation’s principle of the autonomy of the will. On this basis, golf etiquette is shown to satisfy the conditions for moral action demanded by the categorical imperative and can be interpreted as an internalized ethical practice that exceeds the status of social decorum.
