본 연구는 댄스스포츠에 내재된 신체 규범의 특성을 탐색하고, 이러한 규범 속에서 댄스스포츠 여성 선수들이 경험하는 윤리적 갈등을 고찰하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 전국 단위 이상의 대회에 출전한 경험이 있으며, 외모·의상·심사 기준과 관련된 갈등을 경험한 20세 이상의 여성 선수 6명을 연구참여자로 선정하여 이들의 생생한 증언을질적연구 방법으로 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 댄스스포츠 여성 선수들은 ‘보여지는 스포츠’라는 특수성 속에서 심미적 요소가 강조된 신체 규범을 강하게 경험하는 것으로 나타났다. 더욱이 ‘여성성’이 강조된 규범은 외모 중심의압박을 심화시키고, 성별 고정관념을 강화시켰다. 이로 인해 선수들은 여성다움의 과잉 요구와 직면하며 신체적 건강뿐 아니라 자기결정권과 자율성까지 침해되는 윤리적 문제를 경험하고 있다. 댄스스포츠는 예술 요소와 스포츠 요소가 복합적으로 결합된 장르이다. 따라서 예술적 측면의 강조 즉, 심미적 기준을 최우선으로 삼아서는 안 된다. 여성성이 필수적이라는 고정관념에서 벗어날 때, 댄스스포츠 여성 선수들은 진정한 자율성을 되찾을 것이다.
Abstract
This study purpose to explore the characteristics of bodily norms embedded in dancesport and to examine the ethical conflicts experienced by female dancesport athletes within these norms. To achieve this, six female athletes aged 20 or older, who have competed at national-level or higher competitions and encountered conflicts related to appearance, costumes, and judging standards, were purposefully selected as participants. Their vivid experiences were analyzed using a qualitative research approach. The findings indicate that female dancesport athletes strongly experience bodily norms emphasizing aesthetic elements, shaped by the unique nature of dancesport as a ‘visualized sport.’ These norms, which stress ‘femininity,’ intensify appearance-based pressures and reinforce gender stereotypes. Consequently, athletes face excessive demands for femininity, leading to ethical issues that infringe upon not only their physical health but also their autonomy and self-determination. Dancesport is a genre that combines artistic and athletic elements. Therefore, aesthetic standards should not be prioritized above all else. True autonomy for female dancesport athletes can only be restored by breaking away from the notion that femininity is essential.
