Abstract
This paper is the result of presenting a new interpretation of Yugugok by paying attention to the relationship between the two key materials of the song, “dove” and “cuckoo.” Accordingly, this paper focused on the core of the song, cry of dove, and inferred the perceptions of the people of the time through literature review work, and tried to derive a connection between the two birds by considering that the use of “dove” and “cuckoo” together would mean that the two birds share some common attribute (or criterion). It also identified the meaning of “dove” and “cuckoo” from this connection, and reviewed whether the flow of interpretation identified violates the general grammar of the genre of Koryeo-Sokyo. Furthermore, it is the result of literary interpretation of the entire work by incorporating the inferred meaning into the context of the work. dove, the core material of this work, is a bird that calls rain through cry. The dove’s crying is the most central depiction of behavior in the song. In addition, the literature records of this cry of doves showed signs of rain, confirming all the male doves that kicked out female doves, doves that cry with resentment, and the perception of the time that it rains when doves cry. It was also confirmed that the rain sung by doves here was common to have the image of nice rain that allowed them to descend on the land that had been a long drought and start farming. The meaning of cuckoo was then inferred based on the meaning of these doves. As a result of examining the use of the literature, it was confirmed that cuckoo was newly recognized by the ancestors as “pogok” and played a role in encouraging and promoting labor in the early stages of farming, such as sowing seeds and planting fields. The connection between dove and cuckoo, the two core words of Yugugugok, has been revealed in that it promotes the beginning of farming. In the end, Yugugok can be interpreted as a song that rejoices in the beginning of farming as a whole.
