Abstract
When addressing the issue of forgiveness, we inevitably encounter difficult questions. Can forgiveness be granted if the offender does not repent? If forgiveness is understood as unconditionally and unilaterally covering the wrongs of others, does repentance become an unnecessary element of forgiveness? Is repentance a necessary step in the process of forgiveness? Many Christians, when confronted with such questions, view forgiveness as synonymous with unconditional love, believing that forgiveness requires no truth or repentance—just unconditional acceptance. The Korean church has long emphasized the responsibility of victims to grant immediate, unilateral, and unconditional forgiveness. As a result, numerous believers within the church have continued to experience deep wounds and prolonged suffering despite being the victims. The concept of forgiveness, so heavily emphasized by the church, has not provided believers with true freedom and healing; instead, it has become a burdensome obligation. Now, the Korean church must broaden its perspective on forgiveness and seriously discuss the steps and processes necessary for genuine recovery and unity. This paper examines decisive forgiveness and procedural forgiveness, addressing the stages of forgiveness that move beyond unconditional forgiveness toward unity and reconciliation. In particular, the study focuses on the essential element of repentance within the process of achieving unity and reconciliation. Lastly, by drawing insights from Reformed Life Theology, the paper explores how pastors and pastoral counselors can integrate a theology of healthy forgiveness into our lives-allowing forgiveness to become a source of life that strengthens the body of Christ. The paper aims to present a direction for moving forward in this journey.
