목회 돌봄 및 상담 현장에서 내담자들이 고민하는 중요한 문제 중의 하나인 용서의 이슈를 다루고 있다. 용서는 전통적인 기독교적 덕목이자 행위로 강조되어왔지만, 용서를 실천하는 데에는 많은 어려움이 따른다. 따라서 내담자들을 효과적으로 돕기 위해서는 용서에 대한 바른 상담적 이해와 신학적 성찰이 목회상담자들에게 요구된다. 먼저 용서가 어려운 이유와 용서에 이르는 것을 방해하는 장애물, 용서하지 못하는 인간의 내면의 문제를 한 영화를 소개하면서 현상학적으로 다루었다. 그다음으로 용서의 과정에 대한 주요 심리학 이론들을 소개하면서 실제로 용서를 경험한 사람들을 대상으로 시행한 한 질적 연구를 분석하며 사람들이 어떻게 용서에 이르는지, 그리고 용서의 과정에 따르는 역동과 과제는 무엇인지 살펴보았다. 그리고 긍정심리학의 용서 연구 결과도 반영하였다. 나아가 성경과 기독교 신학의 관점에서 용서의 문제를 다루었다. 인간 용서의 바탕이 되는 하나님의 용서, 용서와 정의의 문제, 그리고 용서의 실천 가능성에 대해 상고해 보았다. 이러한 논의를 바탕으로 용서의 목회신학을 제시하였는데, 첫째, 용서는 인간의 현실과 실존에 바탕을 두어야 한다는 것이며, 둘째, 인간의 용서가 하나님의 용서에 근거할 때, 용서는 가능하다는 것이며, 셋째, 용서의 과정을 돕기 위해 치유적 환경이 제공되어야 한다고 역설하였다. 끝으로 용서의 이슈를 다룰 때 목회상담자들이 피해야 할 두 가지 상담 방식에 관해 설명하였다.
Abstract
This article constructs a pastoral theology of forgiving in the context of pastoral care and counseling. Although forgiveness has been considered as an important Christian virtue and action throughout church history, its praxis has not been very effective. In order to help counselees to exercise forgiveness more effectively, pastoral theologians and caregivers need to have sound knowledge of forgiveness and its related theological reflections. Using illustrations from a film, this article first examines why forgiving is difficult in real-life situations by analyzing the main obstacles to forgiveness, along with the kinds of deep inner problems which make forgiveness difficult. Next, the article considers the psychology of forgiveness, focusing on theories of the process of forgiving, which is closely examined using qualitative research on forgiveness. Recent research on forgiveness in the field of positive psychology is also utilized. Then the article explores the theology of forgiveness, including God’s forgiveness and its relationship with human forgiveness; the problem of forgiveness and justice; and the possibility of exercising forgiveness in real life. Based on the aforementioned investigations on forgiveness, this article attempts to propose a pastoral theology of forgiving. First, forgiveness needs to consider human existence and reality as its crucial starting point. Second, human forgiveness is possible when it is rooted in God’s forgiveness. Third, creating a therapeutic environment is necessary for the development and practice of forgiveness. The paper concludes with a discussion of practices that pastoral caregivers should avoid in the ministry of care of forgiving.
