Abstract
This study analyzes the liminal spaces depicted in the documentary Sugung—including staircases, corridors, tunnels, and trains—as affective and symbolic sites where memory, identity, and artistic ethics are reconstructed. Drawing on theories of liminality (Victor Turner), non-place (Marc Augé), heterotopia (Michel Foucault), and affective architecture (Al‑Saati et al.; Clocherty), this paper ex plores how transitional spaces function not merely as settings but as agents of emotional transition, temporal disruption, and aesthetic reconfiguration. In particular, the film’s spatial compositions—such as slow long takes in tunnels or silent scenes behind glass doors—visualize the unspoken affects of aging female performers, embodying “symbolized silent affects” that resist conventional representation. The documentary avoids romanti cizing traditional art or proposing utopian futures; rather, it presents emotional impasses and un resolved subjectivities through stillness, delay, and spatial detours. By analyzing these spaces not as passive backgrounds but as affective architectures of becoming, this paper argues that contemporary documentary film must go beyond showing to evoke think ing-feeling and re-presenting.
