생태학적 성결신학: 웨슬리의 ‘하나님의 형상’을 중심으로

이 논문은 웨슬리가 이해한 하나님의 형상이란 관점에서 생태학적 성결을 검토한다. 웨슬리는 하나님의 형상을 자연적, 정치적, 그리고 도덕적형상으로 이해했다. 웨슬리 신학에서 하나님의 형상을 회복해 가는 과정은 하나님을 사랑하고 이웃을 사랑하는 것으로서 구원의 길을 포함할 뿐만 아니라 피조 세계에 대한 청지기로서 인간의 책임을 포함하는 성결한 삶과 연결되어 있다. 웨슬리에 따르면, 타락의 결과로 하나님의 형상은 훼손되었고 자연 역시 손상을 입게 되었다. 하지만 그리스도 안에서 하나님의 형상은 회복될 수 있고 성결도 시작될 수 있다. 웨슬리에게 성결한 삶의 과정은 하나님의 형상을 회복해 가는 과정이기도 하지만 훼손된 자연을 회복하는 과정이기도 하다. 즉 인간이 하나님의 형상을 회복하면 할수록 그는 하나님을 사랑하고 이웃을 사랑하며 자연을 더욱 돌보게 된다는 것이다. 그래서 이 논문은 성결한 삶으로서 하나님의 형상 회복은 개인적인 것에 국한되는 것이 아니라 자연환경을 회복하는 과정으로 확대된다는 것을 지적한다. 본 저자는 하나님의 형상을 회복하는 과정인 성결이 개인적인 삶과 피조 세계의 회복에 대한 인간의 책임을 포함하는 것으로써웨슬리안 생태학적 성결을 설명한다.
Abstract
This article examines ecological holiness theology as it relates to John Wesley’s understanding of imago dei. Wesley understood the image of God as a natural, political, and moral image. The process of restoring the image of God in the theology of Wesley is connected to holy life, not only as the way of salvation-what Wesley understood as loving God and neighbor-but also as human responsibility for the stewardship of the environment, namely the created world. According to Wesley, as a result of the fall, the image of God was defaced and nature was damaged as well. However in Christ, the image of God can be restored and sanctification can begin. The process of sanctification can be said to be the process of restoring the image of God which includes loving and restoring damage to nature as well. That is why as much as a human being restores the image of God, he or she can love God, neighbor, and loving care of nature much more. Thus this article points out that restoring the image of God as a holy life is not limited to only personal but extended to also restoring the process of nature and environment. This is, what I call, ecological holiness theology of which sanctification, that is the process of restoring the image of God, includes personal life and our responsibility for the created world.
