Abstract
Platform labor, proliferating with the advancement of digital technology, is dismantling traditional employment relationships and profoundly impacting worker’s daily lives, inner worlds, and modes of relationality. This transformation, under the guise of “flexibility”, deepens employment instability and new structures of exploitation, emerging as a significant social issue in contemporary society. While contemporary literature has begun to address this issue, existing research has been limited, merely exploring the possibilities of platform labor without sufficiently illuminating the profound changes brought about by its core characteristic: transience. Therefore, this study analyzes how the transience of platform labor alters the essence of work and human relationships, and consequently, the direction in which contemporary labor consciousness is heading, focusing on Lee Seo-su’s Help me sister and Lee Dong-wook’s Handle. The forms of platform labor depicted in Help me sister and Handle demonstrate that temporary acts of distancing, such as self-erasure and silence, have become core commodities within platform capitalism. This indicates a precursor to a new form of labor alienation. In Handle, the narrator’s performance of a persona through self-erasure transcends the classic dimension of emotional labor (acting out one’s feelings). It represents a phenomenon where the worker is reified into a mere tool rather than a person, culminating in a new form of labor alienation where even one’s ethical judgment is estranged. Through tasks such as family substitution and proxy notification, Help me sister illuminates how the modern labor market outsources not only the positive aspects of human relationships (like celebrations) but also their negative dimensions (like conflict and hatred), revealing an explicit commodification of relationships. Ultimately, both novels demonstrate that the “ethic of non-intervention”—born from the transience of platform labor—conclusively leads to the perception that “all relationships are transactable.” This signifies more than a mere change in the labor environment; it demonstrates that the logic of the capitalist market is penetrating the deepest spheres of human existence.
