Abstract

In March 1932, Japan established Manchukuo. Before and after the founding of Manchukuo, many articles regarding Manchu Incident and Manchukuo were published in various newspapers and magazines in Korea. The Children’s World also contains an article on the national crisis, although the publishing environment and securing writers were poor due to the Shanghai incident. This paper summarizes the perspectives on Manchuria of representative children’s magazines in Korea and China as follows, limited to 1932. First, it is the name called ‘Manchria’. ‘Manchu’, referred to in Korea, contains the meaning of our old land along with the regional concept. In China, it is called the “Northeast Region” or the “Northeast Three Provinces”, a term that confirms the territory of China. Second, there is a difference in perception between Korea and China that looks at the difficulties of compatriots living in Manchuria. Children is not showing anti-Japanese sentiment. Rather, it highlights the situation of compatriots suffering from the atrocities of the Chinese people, fueling anti-China sentiment. The Children’s World makes it clear that the difficult reality that Korean in China suffered is due to the Japanese invasion. Third, there is a difference in view of Chinese voluntary army against Japan. While China sanctifies them as anti-Japanese fighters, Korean denigrate them as ‘traitors’. The reason why we should pay attention to “Manchu” is that some people left Korea during the Japanese colonial period and lived in Manchuria and returned to Korea after liberation, but others remained for various reasons. They are now “Korean”, one of the 55 ethnic minorities classified by China. Therefore, Manchuria is not the past, but the present, which is closely related to our identity, diplomacy, and overseas Korean policy, and is also connected to the future. Therefore, this paper attempted to contribute to various perspectives on Manchuria through the Korea-China Children’s Magazine in 1932 and to help set our perspective on the Korean-Chinese.
