Abstract

Since around 1930 nationalism in colonized Korea changed to have a anti－Chinese look out of old form of anti－Japanese imperialism after Koreans in Manchuria had been frequently suffering damage from military collisions between China under the Kuomintang government and Japanese Kwantung Army. After the Manchurian Incident nationalism against Chinese changed its shape into internationalism striving international reconciliation with native Manchurians on the assumption of Koreans’ predominance. But this internationalism was one of tactics to secure the second authority for Korean advantage with assisting Japan in Manchukuo. It is materialized by two mechanisms, those are racial discrimination against native Manturian and identification with Japanese. I name it inter/nationalism because this eccentric internationalism is always ready to get rid of ‘inter’ from internationalism and to convert to nationalism. In this paper I describe how Koreans’ political hysteria caused by maintainable suffering from military collisions between China and Japan had changed into inter/nationalism and analyse how mass media and rumors aggravated it and set up Manchuria as a sign removed from realities.
