Abstract
This paper researches on Chinese perceptions of the Wanpaoshan Incident and anti-Chinese riots in colonial Korea which erupted in 1931(both incidents are referred to as the Wanpaoshan Incident). The study examined how Chinese framed the incidents and placed them in a long-term historical narrative, surveying many sources ranging from newspapers and magazines in the moment of the incident, nationalist writings in 1930s after the Mukden Incident, to retrospective materials from the 1980s and 1990s. Most importantly noted that different narratives and framing of a particular incident could result in various historical perspectives. As a result this study found that despite the diversity of writers and the passage of sixty years, there was a strong tendency to understanding the two incidents as the result of Japanese conspiracy and planned invasions, and to attribute meaning to the Wanpaoshan Incident from the historical perspective of Japanese imperialism in China. In July 1931, much of the Chinese press viewed the Wanpaoshan Incident in the context of the national conflict between China and Japan. It was also seen as a critical step in Japanese imperialism's invasion of China since the Meiji Era, and the beginning of its occupation of the Northeast China(Manchuria), Rather than considering the contingency of the incident or the complicated conflicts of interest among three peoples, Chinese, Japanese, and Koreans, the Wanpaoshan Incident was described within a simplistic long-term narrative of Japanese invasion and Chinese righteous resistance. This perception was further solidified through the Second Sino-Japanese War(1937-1945) and the establishment of the People's Republic of China, Therefore, it is repeated in a certain form in the memoirs of those who experienced the incident, as well as in the writings of Chinese historians today. Meanwhile, the Chinese view of Koreans was complex and ambivalent. They sympathized with Koreans oppressed by Japanese colonialism and saw them as friends in the anti-imperialism struggles, but at the same time they despised or hated Koreans, seeing them as collaborators for Japanese imperialism.
