Abstract
This study explores the development of Buddhist personality theory through the transition from anātman(non-self) in early Buddhism to mahākaruṇā(great compassion) in Mahāyāna Buddhism. The early doctrine of non-self, analyzed through the five aggregates(pancaskandha), dismantles the illusion of a permanent self and provides the foundation for the arahant, an ideal of self-transcendence that achieves liberation by eradicating attachment and delusion. Mahāyāna Buddhism, however, places great compassion at the center, presenting the bodhisattva who vows to remain in the world until all beings are liberated. This compassion arises not merely from sentiment but from the realization of emptiness(śūnyatā) and dependent origination(pratītya-samutpāda), which reveal the inseparability of self and others. The study argues that non-self and compassion are integrated in the principle of “seeking enlightenment above and delivering beings below”(śaṅkubodhi–hāhuà-zhòngshēng), where wisdom and compassion function as inseparable dimensions of an ideal personality. This integration, exemplified in the Buddha and great bodhisattvas, also resonates with modern psychology, particularly Kohlberg’s post-conventional morality and Maslow’s self-transcendence. In response to the challenges of modern individualism and the erosion of empathy, Buddhist personality theory offers a practical vision for cultivating wisdom and compassion as the foundation for solidarity and genuine human flourishing.
