Abstract

This study examines Śāntideva’s ethical thought in the Bodhicaryāvatāraby placing it into dialogue with contemporary moral psychology and moral phenomenology. It focuses on the problem of self-acceptance, which has become increasingly urgent in modern contexts where self-hatred, shame, and emotional isolation undermine moral self-understanding and interpersonal relatedness. The analysis compares core mechanisms identified in moral psychology—empathy, self-acceptance, prosocial motivation, and emotion regulation—with key components of Buddhist ethics, showing how Śāntideva’s relational conception of the self, the cultivation of bodhicitta (菩提心), and the insight into the non-duality of self and others (ātma–para abheda, 自他不二) can expand and deepen current theoretical discussions of self-acceptance. The Buddhist doctrines of non-self (anātman, 無我) and the dynamics of benefiting both self and others (ātmārtha–parārtha, 自利利他) provide a philosophical and ethical basis for dismantling fixed self-conceptions and cultivating a relational self, thereby enabling a more stable form of self-acceptance. Śāntideva’s ethics integrates emotional transformation, self-understanding, and relational practice through bodhicitta and the six pāramitās (六波羅蜜), forming a structure that resonates with both moral psychology and moral phenomenology. Ultimately, his ethical vision moves beyond normative prescriptions to encompass emotional healing, social solidarity, and ecological responsibility, offering an alternative model of moral sensibility in an age marked by competition, fragmentation, and emotional insecurity.
