만해 한용운의 간화선과 구세에 대한 고찰

본 연구는 만해가 가진 간화선사로서의 측면과 그의 구세관에 대한 것이다. 본 논의는 크게 세 가지 관점에서 진행되었다. 첫째, 만해의 간화선관을 논의하였다. 만해는 임제종 간화선의 입장에서 화두를 참구하여 깨침을 얻었고 그것으로 선을 해석했다. 만해는 선을 특정 종파적 수행으로 귀결시키기보다 그 자체를 우리의 구체적 삶과 일상에 통합시켜 선에도 얽매이지 않는 선을 주장했더. 그는 선의 깨침에 다가가기 위한 전제조건으로 화두참구를 강조했다. 둘째, 만해의 구세에 대한 관점은 오도송에도 나타나 있지만 그가 깨침을 얻기 전 완성한 조선불교유신론에도 드러나 있다. 만해는 구세를 불교의 핵심이자 사명으로 파악했다. 그는 참선의 목적이 구세에 있음을 강조한 것이다. 셋째, 만해가 주창한 구세의 관점을 그의 ‘선외선’과 십현담주해의 ‘이류중행’, 그리고 ‘대중불교의 건설’을 통해 살펴보았다. 만해는 깨친 자가 미혹한 자를 돕는 수직적이며 위계적인 구세가 아닌 본래 성불되어 있음을 깨치는 자력의 구세와 적극적인 보살의 구세를 강조했다. 이러한 만해의 구세관은 자신의 해탈과 다른 존재의 구제를 둘로 나누지 않는 ‘대중불교의 건설’로 더욱 구체화되었다.
Abstract
This study examined Manhae’s aspect as a Master of Ganhwaseon and his View of Salvation of the World. This discussion was conducted from three major perspectives. First, Manhae’s View of the Ganhwaseon was discussed. Manhae obtained enlightenment by practicing the Hwadu from the perspective of Linji School and interpreted Seon with it. Manhae insisted on Seon that is not bound by Seon by integrating it into our specific lives and daily lives, and emphasized Practice of Hwadu as a prerequisite for approaching this enlightenment of Seon. Second, Manhae’s view of salvation of the world is revealed in his enlightenment poetry, but also in <The Revitalizing Reformation of Chosun Buddhism>, which he completed before attaining enlightenment. Manhae emphasized that the purpose of Practice of Seon is salvation of the world. Third, I examined the perspective of salvation advocated by Manhae through his ‘Seon outside Seon’, ‘public reformation in different species’ of <Annotation to The Ten Profound Verses>, and ‘the construction of popular Buddhism.’ This view of salvation advocated by Manhae was further concretized through the ‘construction of popular Buddhism,’ which did not divide one’s own liberation and the salvation of other beings into two.
