이 글의 목적은 루소의 경제사상을 정리하고 분석하여 18세기 경제사상에있어서 그의 사상의 위치와 특징을 조명하는 것이다. 이를 위해, 2절에서는 18 세기의 사상가들의 정치경제학에 대한 이해와 이후의 발달과정을 살펴봄으로써, 루소의 경제사상의 자리매김과 동시에 그동안 연구가 이루어지지 않았던이유에 대해 추론한다. 3절에서는 경제사상은 경제현상을 설명하려는 노력이라는 점을 전제하여, 프랑스 경제에 대한 중농주의와 루소의 처방을 비교함으로써루소의 경제사상의 특징을 부각시킨다. 4절에서는 『코르시카헌법초안』, 『폴란드정부론』, 『사회계약론』과 『정치경제론』을 중심으로, 루소의 경제사상에 대한 이해를 심화시킨다. 5절에서는 루소의 정치체제와 경제체제의 관계에서 국부와 자유개념의 의미와 특징을 살펴봄으로써, 결론에 이르러 현대 경제학에서사라진 정치의 역할을 되살리고자 시도한다.
Abstract
This article aims at explaining the meaning of Rousseau’s economic thoughts in the history of political economy. The first section traces out the origin and development of political economy since the 18th century. In the second section, I try to examine why his economic thoughts had been excluded from the history of economics. The third section illumines the characteristics of Rousseau’s economic ideas, comparing them to Quesnay’s physiocracy in terms of the contemporary economic situations of France. In the fourth section, I analyze the concrete ideas of Rousseau’s political economy focusing on his Discourse on Political Economy, The Social Contract and other important works that contain his economic thoughts. The fifth section explicates Rousseau’s own conception of wealth and freedom, which are related to his political view of the state’s wealth and citizenship. In conclusion, I argue that as Rousseau’s views of political economy show, the role of politics must be considered in our grasp of the current economic problems.
