본 연구는 2018 평창동계올림픽(이하 평창올림픽)이라는 메가 스포츠이벤트(event, 사건/행사)를 통해 국가라는 개념이 평창이라는 지역에서 어떠한 방식으로 유지되는지를 살펴보는 연구이다. 본 연구는 국가가 존재론적으로 문화적임을 강조하는 이론적 관점에 따라 평창올림픽을 상징, 공간, 시간이라는 주제를 가지고 분석한다. 평창올림픽은 그것이 개최되는 국가에 상징력을 부여한다. 이는 행사 기간 동안 평창의 인구와 자원을 동원하는 기제로 작용하다가, 폐막과 동시에 해당 상징력은 약화되고 만다. 그 결과 올림픽의 성과를 자신의 이해관계에 따라 활용하는 상이한 집단들로 인해 기존 평창에 존재하고 있던 공간적 균열이 드러난다. 한편, 정부는 해당 사건/행사를 기억하는 ‘평화 올림픽’의 내러티브로 기존 올림픽의 상징력을 유지하려고 하지만, 지역 주민들은 올림픽을 국가와는 다른 방식으로 기억하는 반-내러티브(counter-narrative)를 형성한다. 이 과정은 국가라는 개념이 다양한 주체들 간의 상징, 공간, 시간적 전략을 통해 구성되고 변형되는 문화적 발현으로 볼 수 있다.
Abstract
This study aims at explaining how the concept of the state is being maintained in the local community PyeongChang during and after the 2018 Olympic Winter Game. Based on the cultural theories of the state, this article analyzes the event in terms of symbol, spatiality, and temporality. The Olympic event endows symbolic power to the host country. This symbolic power functions as the mobilizing mechanism of populations and resources in PyeongChang during the event, which fades away as soon as the event ends. This process reveals the spatial fractures of the inter-town rift and the inter-city conflict in PyeongChang concerning how the legacy of the event can be used by various stakeholder groups. Meanwhile, the government promotes the narrative of “Peace Olympic” in order to secure the symbolic power of the event, and the residents in PyeonChang produce the counter-narratives by which they remember the event in differing ways. This dynamism shows the cultural manifestation of the state constructed and transformed through the symbolic, spatial, and temporal strategies by various agencies.
