생태관광, 지질관광, 지리관광의 비교 고찰

A Comparative Study on Ecotourism, Geological Tourism and Geographical Tourism

초록

국내에서 지오투어리즘은 대개 지질관광으로 번역되어 환경부, 제주도청, 한국유네스코위원회 등에서 사용되고 있다. 지질분야에 한정되고 있는 지오투어리즘은 관광시장의 세분화, 표적시장의 선정 등 지오투어리즘을 활성화하기 위한 전략적 마케팅 계획을 수립하거나 관련 상품의 개발, 가격, 유통, 촉진 등 전술적 마케팅 계획을 수립하는 데 어려움을 발생시킨다. 이에 본 연구에서는 지오투어리즘의 개념을 명확히 하기 위하여 지오투어리즘의 전신이라 할 수 있는 생태관광의 등장배경과 개념을 살펴보고, 생태관광의 후속적인 형태인 지오투어리즘을 지질관광과 지리관광으로 구분하여 개념적인 부분과 관광의 목적 부문 등에서 그 차이점을 살펴보았다. 생태관광과 지질관광의 가장 큰 차이점은 생태관광은 주로 보전지역 혹은 자연경관이 우수한 지역을 대상으로 하는 관광의 형태로 이해할 수 있고, 지질관광은 대개 지질자원 혹은 지형자원이 우수한 지역을 대상으로 하는 관광활동이다. 이에 반해 지리관광은 반드시 보전지역에 대한 관광이거나 자연경관이 우수한 지역에 대한 관광일 필요성은 없으며, 어느 한 지역이 지니고 있는 장소성 혹은 지역성을 고양하는 것을 목적으로 하는 관광활동이다. 지리관광의 장점은 생태관광이 지니고 있는 개념상의 모호성을 감소시키는 것과, 지속가능한 관광을 계량화하는 데 도움을 줄 수 있는 것으로 제시하였다.

Abstract

In Korea, the term of geotourism is mainly considered as a geological tourism used by the Ministry of Environment, Jeju island local authority and Korean National Commission for UNESCO. However, this may lead to a number of difficulties in addressing appropriate geotourism marketing plans caused by the exclusion of the components of geographical tourism. The purpose of this study is, therefore, to understand geotourism by looking into the background and concepts of ecotourism and geotourism, while dividing the geotourism into two types of tourism: geological tourism and geographical tourism. The understanding of geographical tourism helps (1) to overcome the vague definitions of ecotourism and (2) to achieve sound and sustainable development by quantifying the total input and output of impacts of tourism activities. In case the concepts of geotourism are widely accepted and an existence of geographical travellers is identified, this helps to set out an adequate geographical tourism marketing plan in connection with both the development of the relevant products and the promotion of geographical tourism.
