Abstract

This study is an expression of anti-colonial sentiment and an attempt to gain independence from French influence, and the struggle to acquire collective identity through opposition to the ruling forces of Niger and France. In September 2023, French President Emmanuel Macron told French media that 'there is no more Francafrique' and announced his decision to withdraw troops and diplomats from Niger, a former French colony, by the end of 2023. This followed a series of coups in the Sahel region - Mali in 2020, Guinea in 2021, Burkina Faso in 2022, and Niger in 2023 - as France seeks to reduce its intervention in the region, where it has historically wielded significant influence. Since the July 2023 coup, France has maintained approximately 1,500 troops in Niger, asserting their presence was at the request of the democratically elected Bazoum government. However, Niger's military leadership has demanded the withdrawal of French troops, escalating tensions between the two countries. As a result of the analysis, the Niger coup is considered to be the outcome of internal factors, influenced by external factors stemming from the lack of a recognized relationship with France, as well as the Bazoum government's disregard for the unrest caused by economic instability and ontological security threats. The support of the Nigerian people for the military coup forces can be attributed to the erosion of trust in the democratic regime due to corruption, leading them to view military governance as a better alternative. The Nigerians perceived the current military coup as a 'good' coup, and it can be said that political developments resulting from it led to expectations that poverty, the previous government's betrayal of democracy, and the restoration of integrity would be possible.
