초록

This article is a comparison between Jung’s epistemology and Yogācāra Buddhist epistemology in order to better understand the relationship between Jung’s Self archetype and Buddhahood of Mahāyāna Buddhism. The realization of one’s true self is the ultimate goal of both Jung’s psychology and Mahāyāna Buddhism. To bring into comparison Jung’s epistemology and the epistemology of the Yogācāra school, the representative epistemology of Mahāyāna Buddhism, can give a deeper understanding of how Jung and Mahayana Buddhism have different ideals of spiritual realization. Although Jung and Yogacara have a similar episte﹣ mological premise that everything that is experienced occurs in consciousness, they are radically different in terms of how to get ultimate knowledge and how to reach the unconscious mind. Due to these different epistemological notions, Jung and Yogācāra Buddhism necessarily applied the constructive and reductive method to approach phenomena, respectively. This article demonstrates how their contrasting epistemological assumptions lead to significantly divergent concepts of spiritual realization in Jung’s psychology and Yogācāra Buddhism.
