Abstract
This study analyzes the historical changes in the commemoration of the Four Loyal Martyrs (Sachungsin), who died in the Battle of Gimhae Fortress, focusing on the local community's written records. The Sachungsin refer to the righteous army commanders Kim Deuk-gi, Song Bin, Yu Sik, and Lee Dae-hyeong, who perished during the Battle of Gimhae Fortress in the Imjin War (Japanese Invasion of Korea, 1592-1598). Although they were all posthumously granted official titles by the court for their meritorious service after the war, it was over a century later that a shrine commemorating these four loyal subjects was established. In 1708, Magistrate Lee Bong-sang initiated the construction of Pyochungsa Shrine in Gimhae, but it was built in an incomplete form, enshrining only Song Bin. However, this shrine also faced adversity when it was abolished during the reign of King Yeongjo due to central political decisions. Paradoxically, this event strengthened the solidarity of the local gentry in Gimhae and became a catalyst for them to unite with the gentry of the Yeongnam region. During the reign of King Jeongjo, Pyochungsa Shrine was reinstated, and Lee Dae-hyeong and Kim Deuk-gi were additionally enshrined, expanding the concept to the ‘Three Loyal Martyrs.’ The establishment of the ‘Four Loyal Martyrs’ concept occurred a century later under the leadership of Gimhae Magistrate Jeong Hyeon-seok, with the addition of Yu Sik. Magistrate Jeong assessed the contributions of all four righteous army commanders as equal and enshrined Yu Sik, thereby completing the Sachungsin concept. Through Magistrate Jeong Hyeon-seok, the correct direction for the commemoration of the Four Loyal Martyrs could be found.
