Abstract
This study investigates the existence and responses of the local gentry in the Gyeongsan region before and after the Imjin War(壬辰倭亂), thereby illuminating the regional particularities of the war experience. Since the Goryeo dynasty, Gyeongsan was composed of three counties: Gyeongsan, Hayang(河陽), and Jain(慈仁). The indigenous local clans, which had developed into the gentry during the Late Goryeo and Early Joseon periods, facilitated the settlement and relocation of non-local clans. However, the growth of the indigenous local clans in the former Gyeongsan region was relatively weak, so that even into the Early Joseon period the settlement of non-local clans in Gyeongsan was delayed, and the rural governance system centered on the gentry was established only at a relatively late stage. In this context, the Imjin War broke out. At the beginning of the war, the Gyeongsan region was slightly off the main route of advance of the Japanese army, but after 1593, as the Japanese forces retreated, Gyeongsan became a point of confrontation between the Ming–Joseon allied forces and the Japanese army. Consequently, the region was devastated due to the obligation to quarter Ming troops and the frequent plundering by the Japanese army in their search for food and supplies. After the war, the gentry class took the lead in restoring the local community, using their participation in the righteous army activities as justification, and actively pursued projects of posthumous veneration for loyalist figures. In particular, the Gyeongsan gentry compiled authentic records of militia leaders and included the righteous army in various records of alliances and records of shared hardship, thereby systematizing their deeds and defining their scope. Meanwhile, more than ten Confucian academies and memorial shrines were constructed in the Gyeongsan region, and most of the figures enshrined were righteous army participants, a common characteristic. In the late Joseon period, the experience of the righteous army(義兵) during the Imjin War served as the principal justification for the gentry families of Gyeongsan to manage Confucian academies and memorial shrines, and to maintain their status in local society.
