Abstract
The purpose of this study is to articulate Johann Sebastain Bach’s music in light of the scientific languages of the early part of 18th century Germany. As is well known, Leipzig and its university was a place where the most advanced and refined contemporary intellectual discourses presented and circulated. Although Bach did not directly involve any sort of scientific discussion at that time, the intellectual discourses implicitly as well as explicitly influenced Bach’s musical mind. By analyzing various ways in which Bach utilizes the ritornello procedure, I will illustrate the close parallel found between Bach’ s works and musical thinking, and contemporary scientific languages.
