Abstract

Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) created the St. Ildefonso Altarpiece (1630), commissioned by Archduchess Isabella Clara Eugenia (1566-1633), which was originally displayed in St. Jacques-sur-Coudenberg in Brussels. This paper aims to supplement previous research with a more comprehensive iconography analysis and to focus on the roles of the patroness, the Archduchess, and the Brotherhood of St. Ildefonso. Early Toledo, often embroiled in territorial disputes, began to emphasize Marian devotion, leading to the veneration of Ildefonso, who is known for receiving a chasuble from the Virgin Mary. In Rubens' altarpiece, Ildefonso is depicted in the attire of a Dominican friar, differing from previous representations. This expression is interpreted as reflecting the political intent of the Archduchess, who ended her life in monastic attire following the death of her husband, Archduke Albert VII. The background of the Virgin Mary features a throne shaped like a scallop shell and columns adorned with foliage, symbolizing her purity and the symbols of Spain and Toledo. The altarpiece is thus seen as embodying the regional and religious heritage of the Catholic state. Moreover, the altarpiece, commissioned by Isabella, was placed in the chapel of the Brotherhood of St. Ildefonso, established by Archduke Albert. This brotherhood was not only a reflection of the Archduke's identity but also indicative of his stature in the Low Countries. The St. Ildefonso Altarpiece commissioned by Isabella served to publicly affirm her position as a member of the Habsburg dynasty, commemorate her deceased husband, and reflect her devotion and role as a political leader.
