Abstract
This paper analyzes how trendy dramas emerged and became established in early 1990s Korean television, focusing on the MBC drama Jealousy(1992). Trendy dramas, while borrowing from the narrative conventions of Japan’s bubble economy era, developed into a new drama format reflecting the sensibilities and aesthetics of Korea’s young generation. This study considers The Dictionary of Happiness (1991) as the first example of this genre and Jealousy as its full-fledged realization, examining its aesthetic characteristics and achievements through elements such as casting, narrative, theme, music, space, atmosphere, and ending. Jealousy constructs a light yet emotionally resonant romantic narrative centered on young female protagonists focused on their careers and love lives, using ‘jealousy’ as an indirect expression of love to propose a new mode of romantic representation. Additionally, its experimental use of music and format in the ending, along with urban spaces and lifelike settings, distinguish it from conventional melodramas and vividly reflect the sensibility and lifestyle of the new generation. Furthermore, within the broader context of the expansion of outsourcing production and intensified network competition in the 1990s, this drama signifies the emergence of a new television drama format that laid the foundation for the Korean Wave (Hallyu).
