Abstract

This paper examines the representation of youth and professionals in 1990s Korean television dramas, focusing on the cultural context of contemporary viewers. As discussed in previous studies, trendy dramas were primarily concerned with portraying characters with a sensory aesthetic and consumer-oriented lifestyle. However, faced with the demands of both entertainment and public interest, trendy dramas began to employ dramatic strategies that controlled youth rebellion while simultaneously projecting the desires of the era onto them. In this context, the emergence of uniformed youth became a new pathway for sensing and modifying the socio-cultural landscape beyond the trendy drama era. As South Korea faced economic crises and neoliberalism, the discourse surrounding youth also shifted in a different direction. Around the time of the financial crisis, young characters in television dramas were increasingly portrayed as professionals, coordinating themselves to fit societal needs. This image-driven representation allowed them to once again take center stage in popular culture. Youth who adopted the external aesthetics of professionals—through fashion, hairstyles, and makeup—played a decisive role in solidifying teenagers and young adults as the primary television drama audience. The professional figures embodied by young stars not only reflected changes in lifestyle at the time but also expressed the evolving social significance of professionals. Viewers, in turn, perceived these figures as trendsetters, learning how to coordinate themselves as professionals and contributing to consumer culture. More importantly, the representation of professionals served as a cultural product that enabled women—who were caught between individual aspirations and societal expectations in an era dominated by economic crises and neoliberalism—to design and present themselves flexibly. This laid the groundwork for future professional dramas. In a rapidly changing Korean society marked by economic turmoil and labor market instability, youth were faced with the challenge of proving themselves and surviving. As explored in this paper, television dramas played a dual role: they introduced youth to specific consumer cultures while also offering a visual and social model for understanding professional identity. Naturally, the fashion, makeup, and hairstyles of television drama stars became popular trends among young people, transforming the desire for professionalism into a visually appropriated and reconstructed ideal. Post-trendy dramas demand a fresh perspective, as they navigate a complex space where heightened sensory aesthetics, societal skepticism toward such aesthetics, and class-driven aspirations for self-development and professional management intertwine.
