Abstract

The Korean melodramas Jealousy (1992) and Lover (1996), representative works of the 1990s, vividly depict the process of female subject formation. In both dramas, female subjectivity is structured around the practice of emotion and the ethics of relationality. While these two texts reflect different socio-historical contexts -early and late 1990s respectively-they share a common feature: centering female characters within the narrative and portraying their emotional decisions and ethical actions as key elements of subject formation. Yoo Ha-kyung (played by Choi Jin-sil) in Jealousy is a character caught between emotional autonomy and instability as a 'new generation' woman. Yoon Yeo-kyung (played by Hwang Shin-hye) in Lover chooses a socially forbidden desire and seeks to realize it, thereby negotiating her own position as a subject. These characters' emotional practices are not presented as isolated interior experiences, but rather as ethical acts mediated and regulated through relationships with others. This study focuses on the emotional interactions between the protagonists and surrounding female characters, highlighting how female-to-female relationships function not merely as narrative background but as crucial conditions for subject formation. The melodrama genre provides a productive framework for narrativizing the mediation of emotions and the tensions within relationships. Thus, these dramas serve as cultural records of the complexity and ambivalence of female subjectivity in 1990s Korea. By examining the ethical dimensions of subject formation at the intersection of emotion and relationality, this research critically explores the interplay between 1990s Korean television dramas and gender discourse.
