초록

This article is to focus on Judas Iscariot as the dramatis Personal, the person portrayed in the Gospel of John. Under the rubric of narrative criticism, the characterization is a useful tool to portray the character in the given story world. In John’s Gospel, Judas as a distinctive character, appears or is mentioned in four scenes(6:64, 70-71; 12:1-8; 13:2, 10-11, 18-19, 21,26-30; 18:1-8) and one scene(17:12 refers to Judas as “the one doomed to destruction). In John’s Gospel Judas is subtly different from the synoptic Gospel and the Acts of Apostles. As character, Judas’s actions and speech are described, as well as what characters say about him. The characterization of Judas is also revealed by the narrator’s comments and what Jesus says about himself. Judas, in John’s Gospel, is portrayed what he does rather than as what he says, although he does speak once in the Gospel. Interestingly, Judas’s only and first speech is in John 12, which, in contrast to the other disciples’ first speech, shows his complaint without any hint of expressing confession of faith. In fact John is typically not concerned about any psychological or political motivation for Judas actions. Contrast to synoptic gospels, John does not portray specifically Judas’s betrayal of Jesus for money, though he was mentioned as a thief by pilfering from the common purse(John 12). Judas is represented as a flat character rather than a round character because he is more focused as narrative plot functionary than a developed character in his own right. Though Judas was given to Jesus by Father along with the other disciples,he ended up as a son of destruction(John 17). Under the influence of Satanic force, Judas did not change his course despite of Jesus’ great gesture of love. As a Satan’s emissary, Judas went out into the world in its darkness(John 13) by abandoning light for darkness. Fittingly, John has no story of no remorse of Judas(contrast to Matthew 27:3-10) as well as no story of his death. This article clearly shows Judas as “one of the twelve” asthe disciple who betrays Jesus, by emphasizing the representing defector(John 6 & 12). John’s characterization of Judas is in human form with the cosmic forces of evil as a type of the ‘antichrist’(1 John 2:18-19).
