누가는 사도행전 5:33-39에서 ‘산헤드린의 가말리엘’을, 사도행전22:3에서 ‘바울의 스승 가말리엘’을 언급한다. 본 연구는 산헤드린의가말리엘에 초점을 맞추어 누가의 가말리엘 묘사에 담긴 부정적 표상과 긍정적 표상을 포착한다. 누가는 한편에서 바리새적 유대교의정통성과 로마황제숭배에 반발하지만, 다른 한편에서 정치적 실체인로마제국과 종교적 실체인 바리새적 유대교를 향해 기독교 운동의무해함을 변증하려 한다. 바리새 유대교에 대한 비판의 근저에는 누가공동체의 선교적 지평, 즉 유대인과 이방인 모두를 아우르는 하나님의 백성의 정체성이 놓여 있다. 아울러 예수운동이 드다와 유다운동과 같지 않다는 로마 제국을 향한 호교론이 가말리엘의 연설을 통해 피력된다.
Abstract
This study aims to examine Luke's double apologetics mediated through the speech of Gamaliel (Acts 5:33-39). In order to survive and grow as a group, the Lukan community was in need of making apologetic gestures toward both the Jews and the Romans. One of the ways of formulating double apologetics is to cast a character like Gamaliel in a specific mold. On the one hand, Gamaliel is subject to an ignoble reputation. His membership in the Pharisaic sect and the Sanhedrin contributed such a negative portrayal. In the narrative context of Acts 5:33-39, however, Gamaliel's speech helped the apostles to be released and the gospel to be spread. This ambivalent portraits of Gamaliel in Acts contribute to the double apologetics envisaged throughout Acts.
