Abstract
he theme of travel is one of the major literary patterns shown in the Bible. The Travel Narratives shown in Luke-Acts share the general pattern of travel in the Bible. There are two noticeable Travel Narratives in Luke-Acts: one is Jesus’ Travel Narrative in Luke(9:51-19:44), and the other is Paul’s Travel Narrative in the Acts(19:21-28:31). The purpose of this paper is to investigate the theological meaning of these two Travel Narratives. Each of these two narratives has its own characteristic, and tells us the thoughts implied in Luke’s literary usage of travel motif. The Travel Narratives in Luke show Jesus who started his gospels at Galilee and traveled toward Jerusalem. Jerusalem, the central space, implied various privileges and possibilities. However, Jerusalem lost its role as a central space while it could not establish the right relation with Jesus. The Travel Narratives in Acts show that the central space of religion moved from Jerusalem, which lost its role, to Rome. Just as there was a comparison between twelve apostles and seventy people in the gospel of Luke(see Luke Chap. 9 and 10), the Travel Narratives in the Acts continuously showed two comparisons through the actions of Peter and Paul. At the same time, this transferred leadership symbolically shows the change of central space from Jerusalem to Rome. For this, Luke had to describe that Paul made a journey, which included trials and sufferings, from Jerusalem to Rome at the risk of death. Eventually, Luke presents his own interpretation about Jesus and Paul’s ministry in the two Travel Narratives, and also presents the changing religious identity of early church by transfer of central space(Galilee→Jerusalem→Rome) and transfer of leadership(Peter→Paul).
