Abstract

This study is a study of the meaning of the phrase “he who believes in me will never be thirsty” in John 6:35c. So far, various interpretations of this passage have been suggested, and I argue that this expression is deeply related to John 4:10-14 and 7:37-39 and that it is most persuasive to see it as the promise of Jesus to quench people’s spiritual thirst through the Holy Spirit. As a basis for supporting this interpretation, I present the following five points. (1) The thirsty language of John 6:35c is closely related to the living water in John 4:10-14 and 7:37-39. (2) Isaiah 55:1-2 provides a better background for John 6:35 than Sirach 24:21 or Proverbs 9:5, and the water in Isaiah 55:1 refers to the Holy Spirit. (3) The words of Jesus in John 6:35c (“he who believes in me will never be thirsty”) presupposes that Jesus will give water, and this water is given by Jesus. It not only fits well with Jesus’ giving the living water in John 4:10-14 and 7:37-39, but also coheres well with the theology of the Fourth Gospel (Jesus is introduced as the giver of the Holy Spirit in 15:26, 16:7, and 20:22). (4) References to the Holy Spirit appear in the near context of John 6:35(6:63). (5) The thirsty language of John 6:35c can be seen as a symbolic expression because it does not make sense literally and this partially supports that this thirsty language refers to the Holy Spirit. These five points make a convincing suggestion to read this thirsty language in connection with the living water in John 4:10-14 and 7:37-39, and lead the readers to interpret it as Jesus’ promise to those who believe in him to satisfy their spiritual thirst forever through the Holy Spirit whom he will send in the future.
