Abstract
This study examines the meaning of “spirit and truth” in John 4:23-24 and its implications for the Bible and theological education. This study was mainly divided into two parts. The first part examines the meaning of “spirit and truth” in John 4:23-24, and the second part examines the implications of this expression for the Bible and theological education. In the first part, I reviewed the various views of scholars thus far. Scholars have variously interpreted pneum, ati of this verse as the Holy Spirit, the human spirit, and the spirit as opposed to the literal. For alv hqeia, | scholars have proposed the Word of God, Jesus or revelation through Jesus, and truthfulness. Among these many possibilities, I interpret the former as the Holy Spirit and the latter as the Word of God. Therefore, I suggested that evn pneu, mati kai. avlhqei,a should be interpreted as “in the Holy Spirit and in the Word of God.” There are four grounds to support my argument that pneum, ati refers to the Holy Spirit. First, out of the total 24 uses of pneu/ma in John’s Gospel, it refer to the Holy Spirit as many as 15 times. Second, in the immediate context of this verse, 4:10-14, the water images of “living water” and “spring water springing up to eternal life”, symbolizing the Holy Spirit, are used. Third, when the author of John’s Gospel wrote 4:23-24, it seems that the worship in the Jerusalem Temple was no longer possible. Therefore we must take into account the possibility that the author tried to replace the role of temple with the role of the Holy Spirit. Fourth, we observed that the combination of the preposition evn and the noun form pneu, mati used without an article, which is the grammatical form used in 4:23-24, was used by New Testament authors to indicate possessing the Spirit of God in most cases (Mt 22:43; Luke 1:17; 2:27; 4:1; Rom 2:29; 8:9; Eph 2:22; 3:5; 5:18; 6:18; Rev 1:10; 4:2; 17:3; 21:10). There are three grounds to support my claim that alv hqeia, refers to the Word of God. First, John 17:17 supports this interpretation and this interpretation also has the advantage of interpreting several truth passages in the Gospel of John well (3:31-34; 5:30, 37-38; 8:40, 44-46; 17:19). Second, 3:31-34, located in the relatively close context of 4:23-24, supports this interpretation. Third, throughout the Bible, the Word of God is often expressed as or closely related to truth (1 Kings 17:24; Psalm 119:160; Eph 1:13; Col 1:5; 1 Tim 2:15; James 1:18). In the latter part of this article, I examined the implications of my inter- pretation of “spirit and truth” in John 4:23-24 for the Bible and theological education. I interpreted this expression as teaching that Jesus taught that only those who have been born again through the Holy Spirit, whom he will send on the day of Pentecost, can offer true worship and that the Word of God, which is the truth, must be at the center of such true worship. And it was suggested that the dialogue about the worship between Jesus and the Samaritan woman recorded in John 4:20-24 simultaneously forms a contrast and a connection between the worship in the old covenant era and the worship in the new covenant era. The connection point is that the Word of God, which is the truth in both the worship of the old era (Jewish synagogue worship) and the worship of the new era (synagogue worship and family worship), took center stage through Bible reading and sermons. And it can be said that they learned the Bible and received a kind of theo- logical education through Bible reading and sermons conducted during this worship service. Based on these observations, I suggests the following two as implications or suggestions for the Bible and theological education in our time. First, the fact that anything other than the Bible should not be the main focus of theological education. Second, since the help of the Holy Spirit is essential for correct interpretation of the Bible and theological edu- cation, it is necessary to check and consider whether or not they have been born again by the Holy Spirit in the process of selecting candidates for pastors by seminaries. It was also suggested that not only knowledge acquis- ition but also spiritual training such as prayer training needs to be performed at the same time.
