마태복음 연구에서 베드로 인물 연구는 매우 중요한 주제로 자리잡아왔다. 대개 그 논의는 마 16:17-19에 집중되어온 경향이 있었다. 그런데 베드로의 그림과 관련해서 크게 두 입장이 대조적으로 제안되어 왔다. 한편으로, R. Hummel은 베드로를 “최고의 랍비”로 부각한 데 반해, 다른 한편으로 G. Strecker는 베드로를 “전형적인” 그리스도인으로 제시한다. 마태복음의 베드로상(像)에 관한 연구는 대개 이들 두 입장 사이를 오가는 상황이다. 본 연구는 마태복음에서 그려지는 베드로의 모습을 어떤 특정 구절 (들)에 집중하기보다, 복음서의 줄거리를 따라 전개되는 베드로의 모습들을 그 흐름대로 그리고 전체적으로 살핌으로써 좀 더 포괄적이고 균형 잡힌 그림을 그려나가는 데 관심을 기울인다. 따라서 베드로 관련 구절들을 순서에 따라 모두 살피게 된다. 그런데 그 결과 드러나는 베드로의 모습은 일반적으로 기대하는 바와는 전혀 다르게 드러난다. 곧, 베드로는 결코 “최고의 랍비”가 아니며 지극히 부정적인 제자의 모습으로 부각된다. 물론 베드로는 대개의 경우들에서 제자들의 대변인이자 대표자로 나타나지만, 그의 역할은 두세 경우들을 제외하고는 거의 부정적이다. 특히 신앙고백 이후 그의 역할은 전반적으로 부정적이다. 물론 베드로는 모든 것을 버려두고 예수를 따른 점(4:18)이나 예수를 그리스도로 고백한 점(16:16)에서 모범적인 제자인 것이 분명하다. 그러나 그러한 그가 예수님으로부터 사탄이라고 책망 받는 점(16:21-23)이나 꼴찌가 될 위험을 경고 받는 점(19:30), 그리고 무엇보다도 예수를 모른다고 세 번이나 부인한 점(26:69-75) 등에서 그는 모든 제자들이 경계해야 할 모습으로 부각된다. 특히 그의 부인 이후 그의 이름이 더는 언급되지 않는다는 점은 충격적이다. 마태는 베드로를 그리스도인의 모본으로 제시한다. 그러나 그 모본은 긍정적인 면보다는 부정적인 면에 더 큰 비중이 주어지는 모본이다. 독자들은 베드로의 긍정적인 모본을 본받아야 하겠지만, 좀 더 중요하게 그의 부정적 모습을 통해 제자가 경계해야 할 실패의 위험들을 경고 받아야 하는 것이다.
