The Korean church is at a crossroads; both internally and externally. Externally, there are attacks from heretics and other religions and internally, there is decay from worldliness and confusion from the abuse of spiritual gifts. This study seeks to compare the gifts as they appear in the two epistles. The function of the gifts will be examined by the help of the context of the churches reflected in Romans and 1 Corinthians. Through this, this paper seeks to draw out the ecclesiastical function of the gifts and to have a biblical understanding of the gifts in the church. In the two epistles, the context is unity of the church and the differences of the gifts. The precondition of this unity is the crucifixion of the churches on the cross. The cause of the division is the self which has not died and remains as a master. The context of the two churches concerning spiritual gifts is different: (1) the problem of the gifts within the two groups of the church in Rome; (2) the use and the function of the gifts in the Corinthian church. If the spiritual gifts benefit the individual, it is for the purpose of building up the church community in love and goodness. To resolve the problem of the abuse of the spiritual gifts, we must emphasize the fruits of the Spirit and apply them to faith and life and to restore the churches.
