제1차 세계대전의 발발에 대한 여러 연구가 있었다.그 중 대부분은 힘의 균형의 붕괴와 정치적 불안정의 증대 등을 원인으로 보는 국제정치학적 관점에서 접근하였다. 공경적인 외교정책과 군사동원 시스템의 연쇄반응 등 군사적으로 접근하는 연구들도 있었으나 모두 부분적인 한계를 보였다. 따라서 이 연구는 제1차 세계대전의 직접적인 원인을 고정된 군사동원 시스템의 실패와 사라예보 암살 사건 직후의 6월 위기 때 유럽 국가들에 의해 결정된공격적인 전쟁 계획에서 찾고 있다. 같은 맥락에서 이 논문은 1914년 6월 위기 당시 유럽 군사/정치 지도자들의 정책 결정 과정을 논의할 것이다.또한 유럽 국가들의 군사준비태세가 어떻게 정치적 선택권을 제한하여 지역 분쟁을 세계대전으로 확대시켰는지 알아보겠다.
Abstract
There have been a number of studies on the cause of the World WarI outbreak, and mostofthem havetaken an international politics approach―such as the decline of balance of power and the increase of political instability. Though there have been military approaches which include offensive doctrine and chain reaction of mobilization system, they have shown limitations on the piecemeal content. Therefore, this study suggests that the direct cause of WWI can be found in failure of the rigid mobilization system and offensive war plan that were designed by European nations during the July Crisis that took place shortly after the Assassination of Sarajevo. In this vein, this paper examines the decision making process of European military/political leaders during the July Crisis of1914,and how European nations'military readiness posture restricted political choices which resulted in a local conflict developed into a world war.
