Abstract
This paper examines the grotesque elements in the Chinese classical novel “Jin Ping Mei(金瓶梅)” through an analysis of Pan Jinlian(潘金蓮), a major character whose pursuit of carnal pleasure and subsequent destruction serves as a vehicle for profound social and psychological insights. Pan Jinlian embodies the grotesque aesthetic through her paradoxical nature—simultaneously victim and perpetrator, beautiful and morally disfigured—reflecting both the restrictive patriarchal structures of Ming Dynasty China and universal truths about human nature's darker potentials. Pan Jinlian represents the archetype of a licentious character obsessed with sexual pleasure, and her life and actions symbolically reveal the oppressive structure of society at that time and the absurd desires within human nature. Through this, “Jin Ping Mei” does not merely superficially describe human desire, but rather sharply reflects the darkness of human nature like a mirror through the destruction caused by such desires. Pan Jinlian's violence, indiscriminate seduction, sexual eccentricities, and grotesque death all demonstrate how bizarre and destructive her life was. Her character arc reveals her progressive abandonment of ethical values through extreme acts reflecting how severe social constraints can spark equally severe rebellion. To satisfy her desires, Pan Jinlian abandoned moral and ethical values, and did not hesitate to commit extreme acts such as murder. Her behaviors clearly show how destructive human desire can be, representing extreme phenomena stemming from the male-dominant ideology and power relationships within families at that time. Her gruesome death, described in explicit detail with visceral elements like bodily exposure and heart extraction, serves as both the logical endpoint of her trajectory and a symbol of unchecked desire's consequences. Through her portrayal, Jin Ping Mei critiques dynastic social structures by presenting Pan not as an aberration but as an extreme product of a fundamentally corrupt society where dysfunction permeates all levels, from family relationships to governmental institutions.
