Abstract

The discussion of where <<The Housemaid> by Im Sang-Soo succeed to The Housemaid> by Kim Ki-Young and where there are differences between them has been made, the one claiming to remake the other. The points at issue raised are the characteristics of genre, the trait of the times, and spectatorship. This study will suggest an opinion about these points of issue through the analysis of sound. The movies which have the strong characteristics of genre use conventional music and sound effects and also use them frequently. The music pieces of atonality and discord are used continuously in <The Housemaid> by Kim Ki-Young. And lyrical score pieces and classics are used in <The Housemaid> by Im Sang-Soo. There are many cases where sound effects contain kind of traits of times and convention. So Spectators are also influenced by these music and sound effects. That's why it is valid to analyze sound to understand the narrative and the identification of spectators. This study suggests the followings as the result of the analysis of sound. <the Housemaid> by Kim Ki-Young has the characteristics of horror movie and that the one arousing horror is the housemaid threatening a middle class family but the housemaid can also be threatened, so there is the confrontation among classes in layered hierarchy in modernity hence the possibility that the identification of spectators are towards both the threatening and the threatened. And the most importantly this movie is based on coeval story and class. <The Housemaid> by Im Sang-Soo has the characteristics of melodrama mainly using lyrical score pieces and classic music, and classic music is read satirizing the hypocrisy of the highest class. And it does not contain the trait of the times in that the ambience sound is not interwoven into narrative. Also there is the difficulty of identification because of the ambiguity of the characteristics of the heroin.
