Abstract

Addressing the works of Tsai Ming-liang, this paper examines the ways in which slow cinema, which has been established as a notable trend in the global film culture and practice of the 21st century, operates on viewers’ perception and experience across film and its neighboring arts and platforms. Around 2010, Tsai made a series of experiments aimed to expand the formal and aesthetic dimensions of the temporality of slowness into the outside of cinema, going beyond the limits of the standardized cinematic apparatus. This experiments, labeled as the ‘walker’ series, are based on Tsai’s recording of Lee Kang-sheng walking on various places across the world in a monk’s robe, including Hong Kong and France, or performing inaction. They include eight short or feature-length documentaries, such as Walker (2012), Diamond Sutra (2012), No Form (2012) Walking on Water (2013), Journey to the West (2014), No No Sleep (2015), and Sand (2018). Some of them propel us to ponder about the relationship between film in the movie theater and YouTube videos in that they were part of the omnibus films produced by and uplodaed on the Chinese video-sharing platform Youku. In addition, the works of the ‘walker’ series reveal their association with video performance that takes the temporality of duration as its object of investigation and its aesthetic form, in that they are based on the recording of the performance of Lee as Tsai’s persona. The play The Monk from Tang Dynasty, presented at the opening performance of the Asia Culture Center in 2015, attests to the expansion of the world of the ‘walker’ series into stage art. Meanwhile, Tsai’s feature film Stray Dog (2014), a series of museum exhibitions derived from it, his VR film The Deserted (2017), and his recent feature film Days (2020), all attest to Tsai’s effort to experiment with various media through Lee’s body as a medium. Starting from the corporeal senses of aging and sickness, all these works bring back to viewers a more expanded world, experience, and perception, triggering the viewers to reflect on the relocation of cinema in the post-cinematic era. This paper regards this continuation and change after the ‘walker’ series as a ‘universe of Tsai’s slowness.’ More than framing the universe as pertaining to André Bazin’s canonical idea of the ‘impure cinema’ that further expands the world and senses in relation to other arts, I characterize Tsai’s works across the different formats and platforms in terms of the art cinema as transmedia in the post-cinematic era.
