Abstract
Gravity is rarely a blockbuster movie, as was noted long takes in the opening sequence of more than 10 minutes and realistic representation of zero-gravity space. When the mainstream of Hollywood blockbusters make them faster with editing rhythm, and more dynamic with a CG character in a spectacular action, Gravity led to commercial success in the hyper-realistic tones and manner, almost the experimental one. The success of Gravity provides a good reason to pay attention to the style. I looked into the making documentary of Gravity to see what kind of practice and choice made the specific style. The crew had tried to reproduce a realistic zero-gravity space of the universe as seen in an IMAX documentary, further wanted the audience to experience the feeling of weightlessness in the space as immersive experience. There were a lot of innovation in techniques and technologies that can synthesize the choreography of camera, lighting and movement of character. To analyze the character of zero-gravity space in Gravity, I analyzed the movements directed in the opening sequence consisting of only two cuts lasting almost 20 minutes.
