Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to study the methods of filmmaking particularly with the spaces in films that non-physical camera creates and to categorize the relationship between film spaces and camera movements. The term, non-physical camera means the virtual camera which only exists in computer software. This study also reconsiders the position of non-physical camera movements in modern films while analysing the new paradigm that the methods brought to film production such as narratives, some particular shots and the ways of editing. Therefore, the research preferentially discusses the notion of hyperrealism of computer generated images that express practically the similarity of our ordinary world. The virtual camera movements in this paper are classified into three types; animation ride, floating camera, and immaterial point of view. For animation ride, the study focuses on science fiction or fantasy movies in order to discuss about realistic computer graphics. For floating(or wandering) camera and immaterial point of view, <Fight Club(1999)> and <Panic Room(2002)> directed by David Fincher are presented as a case study because of their omniscient point of camera view using computer generated images with practical background and suspense story content. The paper has reached to its conclusion that first, non-physical camera movements have presented the new aesthetics of film production by actively adopting computer graphics. Those camera movements are clearly mediated from the ones in traditional films. Second, this method not only offered the virtual camera notion as innovative convenience to filmmakers, but also opened the whole new possibility to create spaces in film productions. Lastly, in the aspect of storytelling, non-physical camera movements tend to reveal the multiple meanings of realism in visual embodiment and implications in narrative structure.
