초록

Korean cultural background and Christian teaching often convey a dangerous message to women that emphasizes women’s suffering and self-sacrifice as an ideal love. They often consider pride as human sinfulness but self-sacrifice and self-denial as mature spirituality or utmost virtue in women. In addition, those who hold the power in the church often take advantage of women with this truncated theological teaching. Subsequently, women become invisible and voiceless in the community of faith. They simply take it for granted that they should obey the will of others. The Christian teaching's excessive emphasis on the virtue of self-denial and self-sacrifice can be a harmful obstacle to spiritual growth for women. It is the time for the church and pastors to acknowledge their failure to help women maintain their self-esteem and self-care in the body of Christ. In the face of the destructive effects of self-sacrifice and self-denial on women, pastors and pastoral counselors should break the silence and take responsibility to reconstruct our theology and practice of self-sacrifice and self-denial. They need to affirm the value of the woman as a person and teach women a mutual relationship as an ideal love of Christianity. The church should be viewed as a safe place and a supportive community where women bring their concerns, where the women will be heard, where the women will be cared for, and where God's love and grace will be demonstrated.
