자기가치(selfworth)는 “자신을 얼마나 소중한 존재로 혹은 가치있는 존재로 여기느냐?” 와 관련된 문제다. 심리학자 나대니엘 브랜든(Nathaniel Branden)은“인간의모든불행은자신의자기가치를인식하지못한 데 기인하며 자기가치는 행동, 인간관계, 혹은 인격형성의 모든열쇠를 갖고 있다”라고 말할 정도로 인간의 자기가치 인식은 중요한문제다. 한국의 유교문화 하에서 여성의 가치는 남성에 비해 상대적으로낮았다. 자신들에게낮은가치를부여하는유교세계관으로인해한국여성들은 자기가치를 인식하거나 그것을 개발할기회조차 부여되지 않았다. 유교문화하에서여성들의자신에대한인식은자신이아니라주변사람들에 의해 결정되기까지 했다. 지난4050년동안한국사회는현대화,산업화그리고서구화과정을거치면서유교적세계관이상당히약화된것은사실이지만유교는여전히한국인의 의식의 세계를 지배하고 있으며 가치판단의 기준으로 우리곁에 살아 있다. 그렇다면 한국교회의 상황은 어떠한가? 19세기 초 한국에 들어온선교사들은 한국사회 여러 분야에 많은 변화를 일으켰고 한국사회에만연해있던부정부패해소, 차별철폐, 그리고특히여성교육을위해학교를 세우는 등 많은 노력을 기울였다. 그 결과 현재 한국교회 구성원의약 70%가 여성도들로서, 이들은 세계가 놀라워하는 한국교회성장의 견인차 역할을 하였다. 하지만청교도적이며칼빈주의적보수신학성향을지녔던초기선교사들의신학사상영향으로현재도한국의보수적성향의교회에서여성의역할이나 위치는 남성들의 것에 비해 매우 낮은 위치에 있다. 교회의주요의사결정은남성들의몫이며여성은봉사(디아코니아)의일과아이들을 교육하는 수준이다. 지난 3040년간한국의 정치, 경제, 법조계,문화, 과학, 교육등다양한분야들에서의여성들의괄목할만한성취와진출이있었지만여전히보수교회의여성들은하나님이자신들에게부여한가치조차도제대로인식하지못하고있으며, 또한남성목회지도자들은여성도들에게 하나님의 형상으로 창조된 그들의 진정한 가치를 개발할기회조차 제공하지 않고 있다. 연구자는 여기에 주목하여 논문을 통해한국보수교회의 여성도들의 자기가치 인식 및 개발과 관련된 문화적,신학적문제점을분석한후한국교회여성도들이하나님안에서자기가치를 발견함으로써 성경적인 자아상을 갖고 살아갈 수 있도록 네 가지실천적인 제안들을 하였다.
