This article aims to respond to ongoing occurrences of violence in Korea. Reflecting upon violent occurrences, this article presupposes that violence is a phenomenon of broken relational bonds rather than is a means of human survival. In order to prove this presupposition, first of all, this article explores two major perspectives upon violence, which are “witness’ perspective” and “perpetrator’s perspective.” Relating these two perspectives to dominant two methodologies which are ‘first order language’ and ‘second order language,’this article claims that pastoral counseling which emerges from ‘third order language’s hould be explored and applied in order to offer more appropriate pastoral counseling to victims of violence. Pastoral counseling, which emerges from ‘third order language,’does not neglect but embrace first and second order language. Therefore, this type of pastoral counseling will have relational bond of human beings in full consideration and more carefully explores social self, emotional system, and the level of differentiation by which relational bond can be investigated.
