심리학의 자율성과 신학적 자신감

심리학 혹은 상담학이 기독교의 진리를 잠식할 수 있다는 기독교 일부의 우려는 현대 과학에 대한 과도한 두려움의 결과이다. 개혁자 John Calvin이나 그의 후예인 Abraham Kuyper를 통해서 알 수 있듯이 심리학을 비롯한 과학은 하나님의 형상으로 지음 받은 인간이 탐구한 유익한 학문의 영역들이다. 그것을 탐구한 이들이 심지어 이교도라 하더라도 그 깊은 통찰력과 지혜는 하나님의 작품이다. 그것을 부인하고 거절하는 것은 그 저자인 하나님을 거절하는 것과 같다. 그러나 목회상담의 역사에서 심리학적인 인간 이상에 몰입한 과거가 있었음을 잊어서는 안된다. 목회 상담자들은 신학중심적인 상담의 태도를 지속적으로 견지면서 목회 상담의 본질인 신학적이고 신앙적인 자원으로 자신의 상담을 이끌어가야만 한다. 심리학을 비롯한 여러 사회과학은 개인뿐만 아니라 사회 정의를 진단하게 하는 중요한 시각을 제공한다. 21세기의 한국 교회가 자기비평적이고 상호비평적인 관계에서 사회과학적 자원들에 대해 열린 시각을 갖는 것이 보수와 진보의 이데올로기 사이에서 갈 길을 잃은 한국교회의 생존의 길이기도 하다. 신학과 사회과학의 적극적인 대화를 통해 현실해석의 원리가 부재한 지금, 이들은 신학적이고 윤리적인 사회의 미래를 보여줄 수 있어야 한다. 다원화되고 복잡화된 현대 인간 사회의 상황을 자기 비판적으로 성찰하고, 타락한 인간과 사회의 구속을 위해 신학과 심리학은 독립적이고 상호비평적인 대화의 노력을 지속해야 한다.
Abstract
Social sciences, including psychology, have been commonly useful instruments for both reformed and pastoral theologians in understanding human beings and helping God’s people. Unfortunately, there was a time of fusion and confusion among pastoral theologians when they blindly followed human sciences without proper regard to theological resources. In response, there also has risen a counter-reaction from pastors and theologians who opposed any use of psychology from a fundamental theological perspective based on dichotomy. However, psychology, especially psychoanalysis, is none other than a hermeneutical discipline that provides a missing interpretation of a person regardless of Freud’s confusing definitions of religion and science. Pastoral theologians including Bonnie Miller-McLemore essentialize the use of social sciences for a thick description of human suffering with its socio-cultural backgrounds, which inherits the practical theological method of mutually-critical relationship between theology and science of David Tracy and Don Browning. The critical use of human sciences may also help Korean churches redefine themselves as pursuing justice by outgrowing uncritical naivet?. Korean churches must extend their understanding to the point that the Holy Spirit does not disapprove the development of science, as many theologians such as Calvin, Schleiermacher, and Kuyper already claimed. Theology is to come first among pastoral theologians and counselors, therefore, which is followed by proper reference to the development of social sciences for description of human sufferings in depth of the time.
