본고는 공간이라는 매개적 개념을 통하여 관상(contemplation)의 경험과 심리치료(psychotherapy)의 경험을 연관시키고자 한다. 물리적 개념으로서의 공간이 뉴톤(I. Newton)의 고전 역학(classical mechanics)과 20세기 이후의 양자 물리학(quantum physics)에서 어떻게 이해되는지를 고찰하고, 이를 은유적으로 관상 기도와 심리치료에서의 내면적 경험의 특성들과 연관시키는 것을 시도한다. 본고는 내면적 경험의 공간에 대한 영성가들 및 심리치료가들의 설명이 고전 역학의 절대적 공간의 개념보다는 양자 물리학의 상대적 공간의 개념에 가깝다는 것을 밝힘으로써, 내면적 경험에 대한 개인의 주도성 및 창조성의 특성을 강조한다. 본고는 현대의 영성가들인 머튼(T. Merton)과 키팅(T. Keating)이 관상 기도의 과정에 있어서 개인의 자발성과 경험의 수동성을 역설적으로 강조하는 것과 현대 정신분석 이론이 인격의 성장 및 치료에 있어서 개인의 주관성과 공간의 창조성을 역설적으로 강조하는 것을 유비함으로써, 관상적 경험과 심리치료적 경험이 개인의 주도성과 공간의 초월성을 동시에 강조함에 있어서 본질적으로 유사함을 밝히고자 한다. 이러한 유비에 있어서 공간 속에서의 개인의 경험이라는 이해가 유용한 매개적 관점이 됨을 본고는 보여 준다.
Abstract
This article attempts to compare the contemplative experience and the psychotherapeutic experience using the concept of space. It tries to show how space as a physical concept is understood in the classical mechanics of I. Newton and in the quantum physics of the twentieth century, and then to show how characteristics of physical space are metaphorically parallel to the characteristics of personal experience in contemplative prayer and psychoanalytic therapy. By illustrating that spiritual and psychotherapeutic explanations of the space of internal experiences are closer to the concept of relative space in quantum physics than to the concept of absolute space in classical mechanics, this article emphasizes personal initiative and creativity in internal experience. In this article, the paradoxical emphasis of Thomas Merton and Thomas Keating on both personal spontaneity and passivity in contemplative prayer is paralleled with the paradoxical emphasis of contemporary psychoanalytic theories on both personal subjectivity and creativity in personal growth and therapy. It demonstrates that the perspective of personal experience in the context of space can become a useful mediation for this analogy.
