Abstract
This article aims to examine the streams of consciousness in the person praying contemplative prayer in which many Korean Christians are interested these days. For our purpose we need to understand what this prayer really consists in. In Christian tradition prayer is understood first of all as petitioning or supplicating God. Another meaning of prayer is meditation or reflection on the meaning of the Scriptures. Contemplative prayer, however, is different from these two types of prayer. Contemplative prayer is prayer in which the believer rests in the bosom of God without using words, images or thoughts. The intention is to be one with God and for one's will to be one with God's will. The person praying this prayer stays in silence, intending to be one with God's will and with God's loving heart. This remaining in contemplative prayer without words, thoughts and images results in a movement through five levels of consciousness. The first level of consciousness is like the surface of a river where one is aware of the coming and going of many everyday thoughts. The second level is when one is attracted to a particular idea, image or thought. The third level is when the praying person gives specific consent to the idea, image, thought or feeling in consciousness. The fourth level is when an unpleasant memory slowly arises to consciousness while one is enjoying the peace and calmness in one's soul. The fifth and final level is when a purification of the consciousness takes place dynamically out of the inner silence of the soul. This process, especially at the fifth level, has a therapeutic effect and for this reason Thomas Keating calls it a divine therapy. It is not easy to clearly distinguish these levels from each other. The idea of the five levels originated from Keating's theoretical position. However, persons praying contemplative prayer acknowledge that during the prayer they recognize inner change and experience peace in themselves and also notice the appearance of a dark part of their unconscious. These changes of consciousness lead to healing called by Keating a divine therapy. Similar phenomena of consciousness are observed in the mindfulness of Buddhist meditation. It is highly recommended therefore that Korean Christians living the busy and complicated life of contemporary society learn and practice contemplative prayer which may lead them to a mature and healthy spiritual life.
