This paper begins with two questions, "Can a child grow healthily under unhealthy parents?" and "Can a child grow unhealthily under healthy parents?" In order to answer these questions, I examine parent-child relationships from the perspectives of individual psychotherapy, family therapy, pastoral theology, and pastoral counseling. Based on these various perspectives on parent-child relationships, I present a vision of hope-centered pastoral counseling for healing and empowering parent-child relationships by using a metaphor of "powerless parents and proud child." My vision of hope-centered pastoral counseling suggests that parents need to provide good enough environment to their children and to trust in God as stewards for their children. I think both parents and children should maintain their hope toward each other although present environments are not favorable, since I believe that their hope in God will empower them to overcome their shortcomings.
