초록

Pastoral counseling has significantly contributed to the provision of theological perspectives in clinical counseling practices otherwise completely immersed in psychotherapeutic orientation of cure. Although pastoral counseling seems to promise inappropriate solutions in the face of ‘apocalyptic’ life disasters such as cancer or abuse, as pastoral theologian James Dittes indicates, it still exerts a strong influence on a person with its theological resources for encouragement of individuals in predicaments. Therefore, in a short-term pastoral counseling, especially about financial issues, the counselor must primarily pay attention to hope from faith and spirituality, instead of simple solution to monetary deficiency. Psychologically speaking, money means more than a simple possession of tools for living for individuals; it means self-esteem or often times, a sign of grace. Money holds a theological dimension in this regard in that economic poverty also makes people suffer from spiritual crisis. Struggles in a family relationship become prominent with the rise of financial dilemma. Although short-term counseling does not guarantee a quick solution to family income, pastoral counselor may provide spiritual support and ethical guideline on how to cope with the financial crisis. The counseling must be short in its practicing terms, but it must be dedicated to theological priorities and values so that the counselee may return to the previous states of life as soon as possible. Finally, the pastoral counselor helps the counselee find an ultimate hope in the middle of tightening financial challenges through the short-term counseling.
